MILLS

Peacefully, at St. Joseph's Healthcare, Charlton Campus, Hamilton on Tuesday, March 2, 2021. Hubert "Hugh" Freeman Mills (Past District Deputy Grand Master of St. Thomas District) of Freelton and Wardsville at the age of 97.  Hugh will be lovingly remembered by his dear Caroline "Carrie" Gerrish, his children; William and Maria of B.C., Mary Ann and Bob of Brampton, Tom and Anne-Marie of Belmont, Shirley and Wayne of Chatham and Ethel of Chatham and Carrie's daughter, Judy of Freelton.

Hugh was incredibly proud and will be lovingly remembered by his 13 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren as well as Carrie's 2 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.  Survived by his brother Edward "Ted" of Burlington and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Agnes and Ethel and his parents Stanley and Annie.

Hugh grew up on the family farm near Uxbridge.  His chosen career as an engineer suited his personality as he was smart, determined and thoughtful. Hugh helped to design and build the 401 in the London to Chatham area, and settled in the Wardsville area.

Hugh's life was rich with friendships as he was dedicated to the many fraternal organizations he belonged to including the Masonic Lodges in Rodney and Leamington, the Shrine, Holy Royal Arch, Preceptory, Knight's Templar, St. John's Conclave, Eastern Star and the York Rite.  His ability to retain and recite poems, passages and scripture was a sight to behold.

Hugh, along with Carrie spent many wonderful winters in Florida and many happy summers at Port Glasgow Trailer Park.

A private celebration of Hugh's incredible life will take place. Friends are welcome to attend visitation at DENNING'S OF WEST LORNE, 202 Main Street by clicking HERE  to register to attend.  You can also watch the service from home at www.westelginfuneralhome.com, or by clicking HERE.
